Generator Maintenance: Break-In, Oil, and Surviving Storage
Generators don't wear out — they rot from sitting. The break-in procedure, the oil schedule, and the 10-minute storage ritual that keeps yours starting.

Repair shops will tell you the same thing: almost no portable generator dies of work. They die of sitting — stale fuel varnishing the carburetor, oil never changed, battery flat, all discovered at 9 p.m. in a blackout. The maintenance that prevents every one of those failures takes maybe an hour a year. Here's the whole program.
Break-in: the first five hours decide the next thousand
- Fill with the manual's oil and check the level on a flat surface — most units ship dry, and low-oil damage on the first run is the classic new-owner disaster (though most modern units have a low-oil cutoff).
- Run the first hour at light load — a few hundred watts, a lamp and a fan — to seat the piston rings gently.
- Change the oil after the first 5–20 hours per the manual. The first fill comes out glittery with break-in metal; getting it out early is the single best thing you'll ever do for the engine.
- Work up to heavier loads over the next few hours rather than slamming a cold new engine to 100%.

During long outages, treat oil like fuel: a machine grinding 24 hours a day hits its 100-hour oil interval in four days. Keep two spare quarts of the correct oil and a filter (if the unit has one) in the storm kit — the hardware store is closed when everything's dark.
Storage: the 10-minute ritual that prevents 90% of failures
- Add fuel stabilizer to the tank and run five minutes to circulate it through the carb.
- Shut the fuel valve and let the engine run the carburetor dry until it stalls — stale gas in the carb bowl is the number-one no-start cause. (Some units have a dedicated carb-drain screw instead.)
- Top the tank off (a full tank condenses less water) or drain it fully for multi-season storage.
- Pull the spark-plug boot so it can't start while stored; store dry, covered, off the concrete.
- Calendar a monthly 15-minute exercise run. It keeps seals wet, the battery up, and surprises zero.

- Start it today, not the night the forecast turns purple.
- Fuel: fresh stabilized gas and/or full propane cylinders on hand.
- Oil level checked, spare oil staged.
- Cords, inlet cable, and CO alarms tested.
- Battery charged if it's electric start.

Why won't my generator start after sitting?
Nine times out of ten: stale gasoline varnished the carburetor. Ethanol pump gas degrades in one to three months. How often should I change generator oil?

Should I run my generator every month?
Yes — 15 to 20 minutes under a modest load (not just idle), monthly. It circulates oil, keeps carb passages wet, charges the starting battery, and converts 'will it start?' from a storm-night gamble into a known answer. Put it on the calendar with the mortgage.
Can I leave gas in my generator?
Only short-term, and only stabilized. For anything past a month or two: stabilize the tank, then shut the fuel valve and run the carburetor dry. The tank tolerates stabilized fuel for months; the carburetor's tiny jets are what varnish shut. Multi-season storage is easiest with the tank drained entirely.
