Vampire Energy: How Much Standby Power Is Actually Costing You

Standby power quietly runs 5-10% of a typical home's electric bill. Here's what's actually drawing it, how to find the worst offenders with a $25 meter, and what's worth fixing versus ignoring.

"Vampire energy" (also called phantom load or standby power) is the electricity your stuff draws while it's sitting there doing nothing — a TV that's "off" but still listening for the remote, a phone charger with nothing plugged into it, a game console idling in rest mode. None of it feels like it should add up to much. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, it adds up to 5-10% of the average home's electricity use, and can run as much as $100-$200 a year depending on your rate and how much idle gear you own.

Why devices draw power when they're "off"

Almost anything with a remote control, a clock, a Wi-Fi radio, or a soft power button never fully powers down — it drops into a low-power standby state so it can wake up instantly. That's the whole feature: instant-on TVs, routers you don't have to reboot, microwaves that remember the clock. The convenience is real, but so is the draw, and it runs 24 hours a day whether you're using the device or not.

Cable boxes and DVRs are consistently the worst single offenders in independent testing — many barely reduce draw at all between "on" and "standby" because they're built to keep recording and downloading guide data around the clock. The problem is volume: a typical home has somewhere between 20 and 40 always-plugged-in devices, and the DOE and multiple independent studies converge on the same range: standby power alone accounts for 5-10% of a residential electric bill, and the NRDC has put the nationwide total at roughly $19 billion a year in the U.S., or about $165 per household on average — more in states with higher electricity rates.

Find your worst offenders instead of guessing

Don't try to estimate this from memory — plug-in meters are cheap and give you an exact number in ten seconds. A basic Kill A Watt–style meter goes between the wall and the device and shows real watts, both running and in standby. A Wi-Fi smart plug with energy monitoring does the same thing plus logs it over time, which is worth the extra cost if you want to catch something that only draws power intermittently (a printer waking up to check for jobs, for instance).

  • Anything under ~1W in standby: not worth the effort to fix. Leave it plugged in.
  • 5-15W in standby on something you use daily (game console, desktop): a smart plug with a schedule beats manually unplugging it every night.
  • 15W+ on something you rarely use (a second TV, a printer, a guest-room cable box): this is the one worth a switched power strip or just unplugging outright.

Three ways to actually fix it

  • Switched power strip — plug a cluster of things you use together (TV, soundbar, streaming box) into one strip with individual switches, and flip off the ones you're not using. Zero standby draw on anything switched off, no smart-home setup required.
  • Smart plug with energy monitoring — schedule it to cut power overnight, or just check the app occasionally to see what's actually drawing. Better for single devices you want automated rather than manually switched.
  • Just unplug it — chargers with nothing attached, the toaster oven, anything you use once a week. No gadget required, just a habit.
Don't cut power to anything doing a job while "off" — a router/modem, a security system, a sump-pump alarm, a refrigerator, or a DVR mid-recording. The goal is killing waste, not availability you actually rely on.
